thinking of you...

 Hey there!  Hope you are having a great day!  Our rainy fall weather seems to have finally shown up in my neck of the woods.   That kind of weather makes it easy to stay inside and craft!  I made a card today for a couple of challenges:  Color Throwdown and Fab Friday.    Love the CTD combo this week, but was having a hard time coming up with an idea.  Thankfully the great sketch at Fab Friday came to my rescue!  I die cut some kraft cardstock with an AJVD stitched dot rectangle die and then the little scalloped border with a die from Spellbinders.  I adhered the piece with foam tape and then moved on to the branch.   That is a die from Penny Black and I cut it from watercolor paper and then used watercolors from Altenew and Kuretake to color it.  Two more were cut from scraps and then I adhered all three together.   I had been using my Glimmer hot foiling machine earlier for a several cards that I will be sharing in a few days so I decided to foil a couple of sentiments and see which one I liked best.  I foiled one in black and one in Polished Brass.  Both looked really nice, but I decided to go with black for my card.   I adhered the berry branch and then added my sentiment to finish the card.  Very clean and simple which was exactly what I was going for!

Christmas and Thank You...

Hello!  Got some crafty time in and made a Christmas card (yay... one more down!) and a thank you card.  First up is my Christmas card.  This one is for the Paper Players and Reverse Confetti's stock your stash challenge (holiday/winter).  I used the Reverse Confetti Triangle Trees stamp and die set along with another die from Reverse Confetti Polka Dot Panel.  My idea started out a little differently then the resulting card and for a time as I was trying to make the card I didn't think things were going to turn out well.  But in the end I was able to bring the card together in a way that I liked.  I stamped the trees in the Paper Players color combo and die cut them with the matching die.  The sentiment was stamped on white cardstock with VersaFine CLAIR Nocturne ink and trimmed down.  I die cut the Polka Dot panel three times from white cardstock and then adhered them together.   The tree with the polka dots had little dots of Nuvo Crystal drops added and when everything was dry I added little snowflake sequins to the tops of each tree.   After arranging and adhering the trees to the polka dot panel I started to have trouble when I began trying to arrange the silver thread.  Thankfully I was able to get it on the card and it didn't look awful!  The panel was then adhered to a light gray cardstock base.

The second card is for the current Sunday Stamps challenge (a beautiful color palette... hopefully I got the colors right and the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday challenge of Thanksgiving/thank you.  Last year my dear friend Greta was so kind to share with me a large prize she won and I was able to get the Penny Black Berry Flourish die.  I finally got around to using it (hangs head in shame) for this card.  I die cut it twice from watercolor paper and then used my Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors to color the leaves and the berries.  Hopefully you can tell that I did use at least four of the colors.  Once the branches were dry I arranged them on a piece of kraft cardstock that I had die cut with a rectangle die so I could determine where to place the sentiment.  The sentiment is from the Simon Says Stamp Thankful Flowers stamp set and was stamped with VersaFine CLAIR Acorn ink.  I then glued the branches in place and added the little bow tied from some beautiful golden yellow twine from Spellbinders/Fun Stampers Journey.

poinsettias...

Hello!  I have a couple of cards to share featuring one of my favorite plants... the poinsettia!  I just love them and have been known to keep my poinsettias around way past Christmas.   One time I was able to keep one going for over a year!  Anyway my first card features my most favorite poinsettia stamp ever... Christmas Star from Penny Black.  This stamp is a wood mounted stamp from 2010.  To me it is the perfect blend of a modern stylized poinsettia and what one actually looks like in real life.  Because it is wood mount and I have not decided to remove it from it's wood block you have to make sure you ink it up really well because you only have one chance at getting it right!   It is even harder when you are stamping on watercolor paper!   I stamped the image using Antique Linen distress ink on Canson watercolor paper and then colored the image with Festive Berries, Scattered Straw and Gathered Twigs distress inks.  I added in the veins on all the leaves with a Candied Apple distress maker and the centers of the flowers (they are the little dots in the center!) with a Scattered Straw distress marker.   When the image was fully dry I carefully added a wash of Scattered Straw.  You can't really see it in the photo, but it looks really pretty in real life.   The sentiment (from an Ellen Hutson stamp set) was stamped in VersaMark watermark ink and then heat embossed with Ranger gold embossing powder.  I trimmed it down on each long side and then adhered it to a card base that had strips of red glitter cardstock adhered to it on each side.   I think I will add this one to the current Time Out challenge as it works perfectly with the colors in the inspiration photo as well as the holiday theme.  Compensated affiliate links used where possible at no cost to you.

The second card is for the current Altenew inspiration challenge.  I also watercolored this image using distress ink.  When I saw the inspiration photo and the color palette I knew that I wanted to try coloring a poinsettia with a variegated color of cream and pink.  I stamped the image from the Altenew Festive Poinsettia stamp set with Antique Linen ink on watercolor paper and then covered each of variegated leaves with a wash of Scattered Straw.  As each leaf began to dry somewhat I can in with Worn Lipstick distress ink to get the variation in color.   It was tough when I got to the smaller leaves trying to keep the separation of the leaves, but overall I like how the image turned out.  I colored bottom leaves with Forest Moss distress ink.  Once it was totally dry I splattered on some additional Forest Moss and die cut it with the matching die.  I created a background by wetting some watercolor paper and then adding a wash of Scattered Straw and then dabbing on some Worn Lipstick.  When the piece was fully dry I splattered on some Forest Moss.   The piece was die cut with a Spellbinders classic square die and some patterned paper from a Tim Holtz 8x8 Christmas paper pad with a smaller Spellbinders classic square die.  Off white cardstock was die cut with an AJVD rectangle die and then I adhered the squares and determined where the sentiments would go.  They were stamped with VersaFine Clair Nocturne and then I adhered the poinsettia with foam dimensionals.  Compensated affiliate links used where possible at no cost to you.

Season's Greeting...

Hello there!!  I have a Christmas card to share today.  When I saw the challenge at Merry Monday to create a card using poinsettias I just had to play along!  I just love poinsettias and have a number of poinsettia stamps.  Some of my favorites are from Penny Black and are part of their brushstroke stamp line.  I used one called Red Star.  I used a variation of a technique that I used on a couple of cards I made last week.  The technique was one shared by the super talented Jill Foster a few weeks ago.  I used Ranger Distress markers in Candied Apple and Abandoned Coral to color the main flower and Forest Moss to color the greenery.  I started by coloring the petals with Abandoned Coral and then stamping on watercolor paper.  I blended it out a bit with a tiny bit of water and then added more Abandoned Coral and repeated the steps.  When I had the color I wanted I added in the Candied Apple to get some depth of color to the leaves.  I finished up with the greenery and then added the centers using a Wild Honey distress marker.  I used the layout from Freshly Made Sketches so I will post it there. I trimmed down the panel and then added a little strip of patterned paper per the sketch.  Because I didn't want to completely cover up the poinsettia I stamped the sentiment (also from Penny Black) on vellum in gold embossing powder and then adhered it to my panel.   Since this week the challenge at the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday challenge is anything goes I will be adding this there, as well.

penny black brushstroke stamps...

Hello from some what snowy western Washington!!  We have been having snow showers over the last few days, but thankfully most of it hasn't stuck in my area!  My son is a little bummed, but he will get over it, lol!  On Monday morning an email from Penny Black Stamps landed in my inbox.  I opened it to discover that it contained a video on how to stamp with Penny Black's fabulous brushstroke stamps by the amazingly talented Jill Foster.  She constantly leaves me in awe with the magic she works with Penny Black stamps.  I watched the video not once, but twice and then in the afternoon when I had some time created this card using her technique.  My sweet friend, Greta, had gifted me with this beautiful Penny Black brushstroke stamp called effulgent almost a year ago and while I have played around with it a bit I just couldn't see to make it come to life... that is until I watched Jill's video!!  This was my first attempt with the technique and since I didn't get the stamp in the original packaging I didn't realize that some areas should be green, but I really like how it turned out so I made it into a card to share!  I think I will add this to the current Stamp Ink Paper challenge of cardmaker's choice.   To do the layered stamping I used Memento markers Angel Pink and Rose Bud, Ranger distress marker Gathered Twigs and Stampin Up! marker Early Espresso.  You can't tell in the photo, but after I die cut the piece I did some ink blending around the edges using Old Paper distress ink.

I was excited to try the technique again so after I got my kiddo off to school this morning I pulled out another PB brushstroke stamp called Berry Bramble and got to work.  This is another stamp I have had for awhile, but had been unable to come up with something that I like when I tried stamping with it.  With Jill's technique I was finally able to make something I was happy with!!   This time I used Memento markers Rhubarb Stalk and Potter's Clay and Ranger's Gather Twig.  After finishing up the stamping I inked around the edges with Vintage Photo distress ink which doesn't really show up in the photo.  I added the embossed strip of red cardstock to make the berries pop a bit more.   I have a few more Penny Black brushstroke stamps that are going to get inked up using the same technique!!  Penny Black posted another video this morning that was just as fabulous.

Hello!!  Thought I would pop in and share a card that I made awhile ago, but never posted.  I used the Penny Black Red Star stamp and the technique that I used on this card and this card.  I love how this card turned out.  I used four different distress markers for the poinsettia:  Dried Marigold, Barn Door, Fired Brick and Picked Raspberry.  The pine sprigs were colored with two different distress markers:  Crushed Olive and Peeled Paint.  I started out coloring the stamp with the Dried Marigold blending it out with clean water.  I then layered on the Barn Door and Fired Brick blending then out with clean water.  The Picked Raspberry was only added in certain areas to add some depth and to provide a more of a shadow.  Once I was done with the main image I added some yellow to the center using Squeezed Lemonade and Scattered Straw.  I also added some Scattered Straw around the outside of the image and then distressed the entire piece with Old Paper and Vintage Photo distress inks.  Some Diamond Stickles were also added for some sparkle, but you can't really see it in my photo. The sentiment is also from Penny Black, but I don't know which set!! I stamped that in VersaFine Onyx Black after everything was done.  I'm going to add this to the current Flower challenge of anything goes.

a wish for peace...

Hello!!  After a crazy weekend of wet and windy weather here in the Pacific Northwest we are back to beautiful sunny days.  It is a bit chilly, but I will take gorgeous blue skies and chilly over wet, windy and chilly any day!!  I recently purchased another one of Penny Black's beautiful brushstroke stamps called la fleur rouge and I have wanted to try out a technique I used on this card with my new stamp.  It took me several tries and a review of Jill Foster's video on the technique before I ended up with my finished card.  I absolutely LOVE how it turned out!  To color the poinsettias I used distress markers in Fired Brick and Barn Door.  I colored directly onto the stamp and then using my mini MISTI repeatedly stamped and blended the colors with clean water.  The same thing was done with the leaves and the stems.  I then scribbled some Wild Honey distress ink on to my craft sheet, added water and painted it around the image.  Once the panel was finished and dry I over stamped it using the Penny Black background stamp called Christmas Story using Old Paper Distress ink for portions of the panel and Tea Dye for another portion.  I trimmed down the panel, distressed the edges with more Old Paper and then added the strip of red mirror cardstock.  The sentiment from another Penny Black stamp set was stamped using VersaFine Onyx Black.  The panel was mounted on a light grey cardstock base and then I added the red burlap twine.  Since my card has a vintage feel to it and it is a Christmas card I'm going to add it to the Merry Monday Christmas challenge, as well as the newly launched Flower challenge with a theme of anything goes.  I found out about this challenge through the super talented Viv as she is on the team (if you check out her blog you will see why!) and since I love flowers I thought this is a challenge I must play along with!!!

little elf finn...

Hello!!  Hope your week is going well.  We are back to our typical western Washington weather (say that three times fast, lol!) of wind and rain.  Can't complain too much though... we had a great summer and early fall!  I have a card that I made for the current Merry Monday Christmas challenge to put an elf on your Christmas card.  At first I didn't think I would be able to play along and then I remembered the super cute Penny Black slapstick cling stamp called Little Elf Finn that I purchased several years ago.  I love the stamp, but I had never inked it up because I was didn't have a lot of confidence in my coloring skills.  I decided that I could no longer let that stop me from using the stamp and so last night I colored Finn up with my ZIG clean color markers and I must say that I am rather pleased with how he turned out! I did learn one thing... I definitely need more ZIGs, lol!! I kept things simple and just die cut my finished piece and then amounted it on a green cardstock base.  The sentiment is also from Penny Black (Christmas Wishes) and I thought it perfect for my little elf as he does look quite jolly doesn't he???  I think I will also add this to the current Simon Says Stamp challenge of anything goes.

celebrate the wonder...

Hey friends!!  The long weekend here in the US is over and school starts this week... my ten year old is not excited, lol!!   Yesterday I got some more time to do a little crafting and came up with this little Christmas card.  The amazingly talented Jill Foster shared two cards on the Simon Says Stamp blog using a really cool coloring technique (Jill has a video on her blog showing the technique in full) and some beautiful Penny Black brushstroke stamps.  The technique looked like something I could do and so I gave it a try.  The resulting card was my first attempt and I love how it turned out.  Can't wait to try this technique, again!!  Jill used Tombow markers for the technique   I have a small set of Tombows and so I used the pink one from the set to color up the Penny Black "red star" stamp.  I used my MISTI as Jill suggested and it worked like a charm.  I colored up the main portion of the image with the pink marker, stamped it on some watercolor paper and then blended the color out with water.  The center of the flower and the pine boughs were similarly colored, stamped and blended with water.  I had a light yellow Tombow marker that I used for the center of the poinsettia, but it was too light and so I went over it with a Ranger Wild Honey distress marker.  I let the image dry and then this morning added a bit more color by scribbling a Barn Door distress marker on my craft mat, adding in some water and brushing it on.  The background around the image was added using the same method and a Scattered Straw distress marker.  To finish I flicked on some additional Barn Door ink and some clear Wink of Stella.  The sentiment is from the Penny Black clear set called "the Wonder".  I simply mounted the trimmed down panel on a light grey cardstock base and added some off white twine.  I'm adding this to the current Simon Says Stamp Monday challenge to "stamp it", the Penny Black Saturday challenge of nature and the current Simon Says Stamp Wednesday challenge of anything goes.  Here is a close up that sort of shows the glitter from the Wink of Stella

3 pumpkins...

Hey!!  Can't believe August is almost over!! Time flies when you are having fun, right??   I have been experiencing a lack of mojo again and this morning decided to do some watercoloring.  I have had this beautiful Penny Black stamp called "Pumpkins" for ages and have hardly used it (sadly I have too many stamps like that!!).  I decided to get it out and color it up with my ZIGS.   Stamped the image with Vintage Sepia and then colored the pumpkins with a combination of orange and yellow markers and a limited amount of water.  I have to say that I'm really, really pleased with how everything turned out!  The sentiment is from the AJVD Pretty Posies stamp set.  I decided to use the current Freshly Made Sketches layout for my card and so I will be adding it to that line up.  I wanted to use the entire colored image so I die cut the image using the second largest AJVD polka Dot rectangle die and then die cut the center using the largest Spellbinders plain oval die.  A piece of patterned paper was die cut using the largest polka dot rectangle die as a mat for the water colored piece.   After everything was layered I added the die cut oval using foam dimensionals to give it a bit more height.  Some clear Wink of Stella was brushed on the pumpkins as well.  I have included a cropped image that shows the Wink of Stella.

Hello friends!!  Popping in with a quick little card that I made for a few challenges.  This is another one layer card so I will be posting it to the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday challenge and Less is More (one layer week - put a stem on it).  I used the Essentials by Ellen Merry & Bright stamp set along with a Penny Black woodmounted stamp so I will be adding this to the Essentials by Ellen February Mix It Up challenge (just squeaking this one in!) and finally I will be posting this to Merry Monday Christmas challenge to have berries on your card.  My holly stem has tiny little berries on it.  Card is pretty straight forward.  Stamped the holly image using Close to My Heart New England Ivy ink and then added the little berries using Stampin Up! Cherry Cobbler Dazzling Details.  The sentiment (from Merry & Bright) was stamped in black and then I added the little bow (also from Merry & Bright) in red ink.   Wow... I have now made two one layer cards in the last week!  I haven't done that in ages, lol!!

Hey friends!!  Popping in with a one layer card that I made for several challenges.  I used to make one layer cards all the time, but now for some reason I find them really hard to make.   Guess I just like a bit more layering to my cards.  Anyway I did manage to make a one layer card and used the following challenges:  Color Throwdown, Simon Says Stamp Wednesday challenge (one layer cards) and Essentials by Ellen Mix it Up challenge (Essentials by Ellen and Penny Black).  I used the Essentials by Ellen set Bokeh Dots and a lovely Penny Black sentiment called 'dreams come true'.  I stamped all the various circles using Pretty in Pink, Melon Mambo and Rich Razzleberry from Stampin Up!.  The dotted cluster image was stamped in Delicata Golden Glitz ink and then I added the sentiment using black ink.  A little bow was tied at the top using some DMC gold metallic thread.    This card was actually my second try stamping all the images.  After I finished the first one I decided I didn't like where I had placed the sentiment so I started over.

spring flowers...

Hey friends!!  Popping in with a card that I made for the current Penny Black Saturday Challenge - spring flowers.  My in real life friend, Greta, is one of the design team members for the PBSC and it has been my goal since she joined the team to play along... finally that day has come, lol!!  I'm also going to post this to Less is More - yellow and green.

I bought this gorgeous Penny Black stamp Botanical Notes ages ago and had never inked it.  No one makes collage stamps quite like Penny Black!  I inked up the stamp with Memento Rich Cocoa and colored it with Copic markers.  I have to work some more on my coloring skills, but I really like how the flower turned out.  The butterfly was stamped a second time, colored and trimmed out.  I attached it and then added a little coating of Crystal Stickles to the center of the butterfly, as well as the center of the flower.   I mounted it on a grey card base as I think it makes the colors pop a little more than a plain white card base.  Decided not to put a sentiment on it... maybe I will at a later date.

Hello friends!!   Popping in with a card that I made last night for two challenges, but unfortunately I couldn't get a decent photo of it so I will only be able to post it to one as the other challenge closed this morning.   The color combo is from the soon to close Color Throwdown #317 and the layout is from the now closed Freshly Made Sketches. 

After seeing the fabulous card that November Color Throwdown guest designer Petra created that incorporated the Eiffel Tower I knew I wanted to do something similar.  If you haven't checked out Petra's blog you really should as she is a fabulous card designer!  I used several different stamp sets (three in fact) to make this card.  The Eiffel Tower image is from the SU! set Artistic Etchings, the Penny Black set, a wish for peace, and the Verve set Holiday Treats.  The light blue I used is a little too light I think.

Merry Christmas...

So... yesterday I had a little crafty session yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) and made several cards.  The first two cards turned out rather nice and they are posted in my Splitcoaststampers gallery (they were made for two SCS challenge... you can see them here and here).  But the third card was, well... I'm going to be nice and say it was "awkward looking".   I'm not sure why, but I kept forging ahead with the card this morning.  I guess I thought I could somehow make it look better, but that idea was killed when I stamped the sentiment crooked!   Ever done that?  Keep trying with something even though you know it is a lost cause?  Anyway... thankfully I came up with this card instead.  It is for the current Freshly Made Sketches challenge and the AAA Cards "MacGyver" challenge.   ETA:  I just noticed that this card also works perfectly for the current Merry Monday challenge: polka dots and/or stripes!


The MacGyver challenge involves using kraft, vellum, glitter and a stamp on your holiday (pick any holiday... I went with Christmas) card/project.  I think it was the vellum that tripped me up on the "awkward" card.   But thankfully the new Freshly Made Sketches layout was posted and I found the perfect way to use vellum!  The patterned paper is from My Mind's Eye (All is Bright 6x6 pad) and I cut it so the word "merry" just peeks out from underneath the vellum and the glitter snowflake.  My stamping is the word "Christmas".   I made the glittery snowflake by die cutting the snowflakes using Penny Black dies, covering them with glue and then pouring on the glitter. The top portion of the kraft cardstock piece was partially embossed for a subtle "falling snow" sort of effect.  Layered everything up and added a wee bit of Christmas washi tape to finish things off.   Oh... I just remembered the current Simon Says Stamp Monday challenge is "finishing touch".  Hmmm... think I will post this to that challenge, as well.

time out challenge guest designer!!!

Hello!!  I'm so excited to be guesting with the fabulously talented Time Out challenge team!  I was picked as the winner of the Home Sweet Home (challenge #10) challenge.  And seriously when I saw I was the winner my mouth fell open, lol!!  Anyway... the new challenge is "Inspired by Words" and the sentiment is "if Music be the food of love, Play on".   All the challenge details can be found here.  For my card I focused on the music aspect of the sentiment and came up with this:

I used the Penny Black set Butterfly Symphony, as well as the Hero Arts Music Background stamp and played around, again, with some simple watercoloring.  I stamped the swirl on watercolor paper using VersaMark ink, applied white embossing powder and then heat set.  The same thing was done with the butterfly.  Once I had my cardstock embossed I got to work adding the colors.  For the main piece I used Ranger Peacock Feathers and Salty Ocean distress inks and the butterfly I used Spiced Marmalade and Ripe Persimmon.  After the main panel dried I stamped it with the Music background stamp using SU!'s Coastal Cabana ink, the sentiment using black ink and then the piece was matted with black cardstock.  I adhered the butterfly, added the rhinestones to the body and then adhered the piece to my card base.

lucky in love...

Hello friends!!  Popping in with a little tag-card that I made for this week's CASology challenge:  lucky.    I don't often make cards for St. Patrick's day, but if I did this one would fit the bill perfectly!  It also works for Addicted to CAS:  Luck (thanks for letting me know Kimberly!!)

 

The tag-card was die cut using a Penny Black tag die.  Two tags were cut, one scored about 3/4 of inch from the top and adhered together.  I die cut some hearts using my PTI hearts cover plate and then stamped four with one of the designs from the PTI Happy Hearts set.  I picked the design that most closely resembled a Celtic one to me.   A strip of green patterned paper was cut to fit the tag and one edge punched, the stem was stamped and then the strip was adhered.  The hearts were adhered to make a four leaf clover.  Some green ribbon was thread through the hole and tied with black baker's twine.  The sentiment (from the Taylored Expressions Wreath of Luck) was stamped on a small banner, adhered and a black sequin added.   At the last moment I decided to add some Glossy Accents to the clover... gives it a nice shine!

mother's day blessings...

Hello friends!!   Can't believe how quickly time is flying by... March is almost over!  Yikes!!!  Have a card to share that I made using Verve's Viva La Verve March Sketch #2.  I'm also going to pop this into this week's CASology challenge.  When I saw the cue word "blush" I initially thought I wouldn't be able to come up with something, but as the day progressed I hit on an idea... hope you like it.

A few months back I bought the Penny Black "rose" die.  I tried using not long after I got it, but my effort ended in dismal failure.  So I put the die way for another time... today!   Can you see where I went with the cue word?   I die cut the rose from white cardstock and then added a blush of color to the rose with two Copic markers:  RV00 and G40.   To keep things soft I used light pink and green cardstock, as well as vellum.  The sentiment is from the Verve set "On Occasion".  After layering everything up I added a few blush pink sequins.  Here is a close up of the rose.
